Expert tips to improve posture

"Shoulders back, and "sit up straight" might be parental nags we have all heard (or made) but those parents were right: good posture is vitally important for good health, and with working from home becoming the new norm, it is important to ensure your posture is correct.

Poor posture will lead to muscles and joints that don't function properly, so they ache or are prone to injuries. Slouching means your lungs don't have enough room to reach their full capacity, leaving your body without enough oxygen and more easily fatigued. Slouching and bad posture are not only bad for your back, they can also increase the likelihood of depression, lower your energy levels and restrict your circulation. Add all that together and poor posture is very bad news indeed- especially if you spend a lot of time sitting. The good news is that there are some simple and easy tricks for correction your posture and improving your health.

Exercise regularly to maintain muscle strength and fitness. Yoga, Pilates and swimming all target your core with will in turn improve posture.

Avoid sitting down for too long at any one time. Try and get up and move every 30 minutes to prevent joint stiffness and slouching.

Avoid carrying heavy bags on one shoulder. Either reduce the load or use a bad with two straps like a rucksack.

Lift your head whilst you are walking. Try to keep your eyes on the horizon. This will help to bring back your head and lift your chest up.

Avoid leaning to one side of your body regularly. Try to balance evenly through both feet.

Keeping up with your regular Chiropractic treatment to catch any displacement early on and allow your body to function at its optimum.
