Swedish Massage vs Deep Tissue Massage

Massages are one of life’s simple—but sometimes confusing—pleasures. With so many different varieties, it can be hard to know which kind would be best for your needs. A massage can truly bring many health benefits, but with over 200 styles of massage all treating different needs and providing various benefits, which one should you choose?

Here at The Accuro Clinic the common question is "What is the difference between Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage?"

A Swedish massage works the soft tissues and muscles to help restore health. Unlike deep tissue or sports massages, it uses softer, long strokes which aids relaxation, improves circulation and soothes tired muscles. The top benefits of Swedish Massage are;

  1. Improve muscular strain – It will aim to flush out body toxins which will in turn aid muscles in healing

  2. Reduce stress – Through the working of soft tissue and muscle work the Swedish massage has a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system. The relaxation focuses on pressure and soothing of muscles which helps reduce emotion and physical stress within the body.

  3. Improved blood circulation – Long stroking motions will be used in the direction of the blood flow towards the heart which will open blood vessels and increase blood flow.

  4. Pain management – Some conditions from which you suffer chronic pain, Swedish massages are an effective method for managing the pain in a natural approach, your massage therapist can target certain areas to work on improving the circulation and muscle tension.

A Deep Tissue Massage targets the inner layers of muscle and its surrounding connective tissue known as fascia. Using firm pressure and slow, deep strokes, your massage therapist works to break up scar tissue and release muscle adhesions, or knots. Some benefits are;

  1. Breaks down scar tissue – Areas that have scar tissue often results in areas of chronic pain or stiffness. Regular deep tissue massages help break up scar tissue which improves drainage and flexibility with the range of motion in the scar tissue area.

  2. Reduces arthritis symptoms- Moderate pressure used in a deep tissue massage works to reduce arthritis pain and ease the tension which makes it easier for those with arthritis symptoms to improve range of motion.

  3. Lowers blood pressure & heart rate- Deep tissue massage works on reducing overall stress and tension in the body which contributes to blood pressure.

  4. Reduces pain – Muscular tensions which can occur through chronic pain can be improved through deep tissue massages, as they work to loosen the right tissue clusters which may be causing muscular pain.
